Hi All,
Looking to get some clarification on the operation of the oil pressure lamp on my '88 Austin Mayfair (3 Clock Dash). When I turn the ignition on, should the oil pressure lamp illuminated then distinguish or should it remain off at all times unless there's a problem. The reason I ask is that the red light (battery charging) will illuminate then distinguish when the ignition is turned giving me confidence that the bulb is okay. As for the orange oil pressure bulb, I've never seen this light up at all - should I take this is a good sign.

I should say, I don't have any concerns that my mini is suffering from low oil pressure, I'd just rather know before it's too late!

I plan to install an oil pressure gauge in the winter when the car is hibernating however would like to have both the guage and light in operation just for added security.

Thanks in advance.

It should act like the battery light, so on with ignition then once pressure builds it goes off.

Sounds like the bulb has blow or the wire is not connected.

Mine with the same problem was a faulty switch, with engine off pull the wire off the switch and check the continuity between the switch spade and the block.

A copy of the original handbook is still useful for basic questions like this!

Your summation of OK / Not OK is and basic operation is correct.

A simple test here is to pull the wire from the Switch on the Engine, short it to Earth, turn the Key ON and the Lamp should come on.

If it doesn't, then there's a wiring or Bulb issue.  If it does, then there's a Oil Pressure Switch issue.

My oil pressure light came on and then off when starting up, but started to flicker especially when I hit the throttle after braking. First thought was oil pump, but it was newly replaced. So, after a quick check, there was apparently a break in the wiring.
