Couldn’t find a recommended interval to inspect/pack wheel bearings with grease in any of my manuals. What is the standard practice in the real world?

There's no factory recommended service interval that I'm aware of however for most use, I recommend they be stripped, inspected & re-greased about every 25 000 miles / 40 000 km. After you've done them a couple of times, you can then usually gauge for yourself how often they need doing, but at around this interval you can usually catch things before they get expensive.

With what we do in our Mokes, the big trips, high sustained speeds and heavy loads, that interval comes down to 10 000 km maximum. I do them before every trip (sometimes that's as few as 5 000 km), the rear are nearly always perfect and could be left but the outer bearing on the fronts always has noticeably darker grease.

I did find some factory advice for Minis fitted with Ball Bearing type Wheel Bearings. They recommend a re-grease of these every 6,000 miles O_O
