Has anyone tried running the SU with just the elbow and no air filtration unit? Im presuming it would flow quite well?

Ive got a 998 stage 1, I don't have the standard airbox and as mine is a 69 i think finding one would be difficult. but it seems the pancake filters and K&Ns have a detrimental effect on airflow without a ram pipe incorporated. As im tight for room at the back of my engine due to the cover Ive made for my gauge hole, I was toying with using the elbow, perhaps modifying it with a file and some chemical metal to give a more rounded bellmouth and maybe a fabric cover to keep the big stuff out?

I appreciate this isn't the most effective filtration media, but this car is low mileage and fair weather only.

cheers

Ben

Is the type you should have a smallish round tin one with a downward facing cone? ? If so I have one I restored.

I think Keith Caver did some tests and the best flow was a K+N inside a standard box with some holes drilled in the bottom.

If you run without a filter, you will compromise the life of your engine. I would read what Vizard and Calver have to say.

Good luck with your investigation.

Best option would be a K & N conical filter with a stub-stack.

You can run without any filter and the elbow would work fine, especially if you put a nice radius on the inlet hole and smooth the inside to match the carb inlet face, but as said above, you run the risk on shortening engine life.

In fact, the K & N's are removed from my 1310 cc 'S' at the moment as I had a problem with sticking chokes and decided strip the twin H4's to get it running nicely again. However, I'll refit the air filters before driving to MITP on Sunday.

ITG and med stubstack have been outperforming k&ns for 15+ years

You’d be insane not to run a filter.
