I have been stripping my gearbox down and i'm down to the mainshaft.  I have removed the 1st motion shaft by tapping the diff end of the mainshaft.

So now i am looking at removing the mainshaft's double roller bearing. How do you remove the bearing's spring retaining clip?

the spring clip stays on the bearing, you drift the bearing out towards the speedo drive, a few taps on the end of the main shaft first should dislodge it from the bearing so you can drift the bearing off the shaft.

Go careful, because you can pop the syncro hubs off and then the balls ans springs go everywhere.

Thanks very much Mini13. I was scared of walloping it too much incase there was something else to remove.

Thanks for the video link too.

Put a cloth over the 2 synchro hubs to catch them little balls if they pop.

Yup, I can attest to that...

Too late :)

Whilst I was busy using a drift to move the mainshaft, the hub fell off the other end.

Only one spring and 2 ball bearings retrieved so far!

I used the spacer tool to push the double roller bearing out. It was out far enough that i could spin the outer race.

Sadly it was still stuck on the mainshaft.

It took me a while to realise i could get a screwdriver in behind the bearing by putting it through diff crownwheel aperture.

Then i lightly tapped the mainshaft towards the flywheel end and the bearing came off the shaft.

Good news, balls and springs are cheap! Mind you, the Mrs done a great job finding them and helping me rebuild the synchro hubs.  Oh if it's a remote g/box, do not under any circumstances, try gear selection without the main bearing C bracket fitted.  It has a stop on it to prevent the 3rd 4th synchro hub moving too far towards 4th, otherwise, you've guessed it, the balls and springs go flying.  Ask me how I know ;-)

John Guess sells a set of new balls and springs.

There's a reassembly tool produced by Churchill tools that makes reassembly easy; otherwise you just need lots of fingers!

the tool is nice, but if your just doing one gearbox its hard to justify, Ive done them with a jubilee clip inside a ziplock bag before

True and for what it is, one could easily be made with some metal rod and a hacksaw.

Why would you need the ziplock bag, to stop the Jubilee clip getting dirty? :D
