What is the best way to provide protection between the inner and outer sills. I have welded the new inner sill to first flute in place and I am now preparing to fix the outer short sill in place.  What is the best way to provide protection on this area as when the outer sill is in place it will be virtually impossible to get to awkward areas?

Should I just etch prime the whole area then scrub off for outer sill welding areas or underseal it and clean off for welding?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

i wouldn't underseal it - there's a good chance it'll set alight whilst you weld the outer sill on

typical approach would be to primer all the bare surfaces to provide some basic protection and then use a good corrosion protection treatment (waxoyl, dinitrol, bilt hamber etc etc) once the car is painted to keep the rust at bay

I don't know what other people do but I kurusted the whole area, then etch primered with the welding areas masked off, removed mask, sprayed over with weld-thru primer.

then I masked over the welding areas again and undersealed the whole area quite thickly.  let it dry, peeled off mask, and welded on the outer sill.   you do need to make sure you clean off any excess underseal too close to welding areas because it will catch fire as noted above (though I'm working on a bare shell so the risks there are minimal)

just take time between welds, weld in short bursts and keep the heat down.  I did it and all was ok but I suppose it's not 'adviseable' as such.. I figured it was a risk worth taking as long I was careful

after all that when it's finished building I'm going to waxoyl the hell out of it through the vents

also the cross member under the seats as well don't forget

Apart from the areas I weld I epoxy prime and topcoat. The areas I weld I coat in Zinc rich weld through primer. When it’s all done depending on where I then try and force more topcoat in.
