Evening All,

I have purchased a lightened flywheel and back plate from mini spares for my 1330. When fitting the clutch pressure plate, on a standard set up it is clear you must align the 'A' markings up to that on the back plate to ensure the unit is balanced.

Do you need to ensure the same for a lightened set up? I never even thought to check when I put them onto the engine (my bad!). I cannot find any reference to the lightened set up have an 'A' marking stamped though.

Before I go and pull it all apart again looking for a marking, does one exist, or does it not matter with the lightened set up?

Advice and thoughts appreciated.

Safely

“A” is normally stamped on the pressure plate and the back plate so you know which bolt hole is positioned at the TDC markings on the flywheel. Pre Verto only.

Hi Safely

What Nick said .

On top of that , if you purchase a 'kit" often the supplier will balance the assembly for you ( throw in bonus of balancing)  and use these markings - so if you like, balanced when fitted in the way intended. If you get the parts separately I was always advised to get the lot balanced.... I add white paint to help identify the correct orientation and while it is sitting there, put a dob on the TDC mark- whether you plan to use the flywheel for timing on not.

How much difference does it make....... I honestly don't know, and it varies how much "out" different set ups have been, I think in the worst cases it adds up to the feel that the engine isn't 100% happy.

and speaking of Safely,if you elect to take it out and check AND if you used locktight on your flywheel bolt, make sure you clean it all out and ideally use the special sized tap to clean it up

The 'A' was stamped on all parts in the factory set up, but you'd have something like what you've bought balanced before fitting, then when you get it all back from the balancers, if they haven't already done it, stamp them yourself.
