A question about genuine vs pattern panels:

I believe magnum panels have a matt black temporary protective coating which has to be completely cleaned off before painting whereas heritage panels are 'e' coated which serves as a primer.  Not sure about magmum.

This is for a fairly low budget project, complete front end and a door skin needed.  However the plan is to get the panels on this side of winter then look to get it painted in the new year if / when funds allow.

For this reason i was thinking to use genuine panels, purely for the better coating but it is double the cost.  Any bare metal at the joins / welds etc could be rattle canned.

Looking for advice and suggestions on the basis that the new panels wont see paint for a while.  How do you prep / protect the metal if its sat around before getting proper paint?  Do you completely clean magnum panels before attaching them to the car?

The black coating on Magnum panels is purely for storage and wipes off easily with a rag soaked in thinner. It all has to come off prior to priming. The ecoat on Heritage panels is much better adhered and you can rub it down to scuff it up to prime on to. Just make sure it is all well adhered as they have been people on here that have had issues going over the ecoat with paint.

As slidehammer has alluded to, Magnum coating wipes off easily and you do need to remove it.

Now the Heritage Ecoat. Its a much better coating but do not be taken in by its better properties. It can and does hide spider tracks of rust and have learnt this through personal experience. Personally i remove it all to ensure there is nothing hiding.

As a painter this is what I do on new panels.
Genuine dealer panels, red scuff pad followed by 2k primer.
Pattern / non genuine panels, sand off the coating and epoxy prime.
I think if I were doing any Mini panel I'd go the epoxy route
