No doubt a lot of you have read the thread regarding the saga of the EV mini on here and the fact that a few holes drilled in the monocoque have meant the guy now needs to pass the IVA test, once passed he will be issued with one of those ugly Q plates, this got me thinking, no doubt this weirdness will trickle down to become part of the MOT somewhere along the line. Presuming the monocoque in our instance is the whole body minus the bootlid, bonnet and doors, in theory the list below will make you need an IVA test
R/H tank ( hole in rear quarter for tank neck )
Weber air box ( hole in baulk head )
Wing mirrors ( hole in wings )
Radio aerial ( hole in wings/roof )
Flip front ( obvious)
Oil cooler ( slot in front panel )
Wheel arches ( holes drilled in body )
BMW 16v conversion ( cut slot in the cross member if you don't want to rotate the engine causing you to have to slot the front panel for the air filters because the D#ckheads at SC can't design an exhaust manifold to fit properly ( personal gripe there ) )

On the plus side you can cut the buggery out of the subframe ( load bearing on our cars ) to fit what you want as it's not part of the monocoque.
I really really hope I'm wrong but I've got a funny feeling about all this

Taken to its logical conclusion, any vehicle with certain dealer fit accessories will require an IVA? Side steps on your £100k Land Rover, roof lights on emergency vehicles? to be honest I'm not buying into it as it's unworkable, but it gives people something else to worry about if that's their thing.

Could you post a link to the thread for the EV conversion?

Dealer fit accessories will not and do not need testing as the manufacturer has already submitted them hence the term 'approved' as I said I really hope I'm wrong but I've got a horrible feeling about all this. Personally I won't be affected as my kit car has been through the test already and my mini is a Mk1 so doesn't need testing, I just don't like the idea of some poor sod having their pride and joy potentially turned into scrap value.

My point was that it could come to these things being checked at mot time. (It doesn't concern me though for reasons already stated)

Ah, but they'll be manufacturer approved accessories....

A very big legal principal is if it wasn't illegal when you did it, it can't be made illegal after the event.

That's at the nub of the leccy Mk1 spat. "The man" is arguing the conversion made it a "new" car. We can only guess why they'd want to, but it might have something to do with the perks it had as an historic vehicle (tax 'n mot exemption).

But that relies on the monkey at the dealer drilling the hole in exactly the right place, if they miss and have to drill a second hole...

I suppose it would make sense to just think one step ahead, and have a word with your MOT man before you do any significant work

I'm getting to know my tester quite well now, been going there for years and he loves minis as well which is partly what got me thinking of doing the project actually.  also is a marshall at Brands, so we end up nattering for ages every time

but yeah if I was thinking of doing a mod with any significant work to the body, and now with all this in mind especially, I'd just go and have a word with him first I think.  if it's at all dubious just leave the car alone

The MOT tester has no interest in any modifications to your car unless they adversely affect testable items. Can you expect someone who was not born when some vehicles were produced to be intimately familiar with every model produced?Even serious things like welded repairs default to "does it look ok?"with some well defined but often misunderstood caveats. As I have said before, your friendly classic car owner is the most likely to dob you in(not all people are like this),Steve..
