Interesting trying to read between the lines for reasons that aren't just poor engineering.

I would take that with a pinch of salt. A lot of people would never be man enough to admit they had bought a load of rubbish.

Surely expectation plays a part in this

as in ... 'I owned a Kia and it only went wrong once!!'  99% happy, and eager to prove the point

vs..  I bought a Mercedes, which is supposed to be amazing, and it went wrong!?!?! (once)  30% happy and spent a lot of money on this damn thing

same actual outcome, but different survey response

this jumps out at me being the case mostly because the 'best' is generally list of budget stuff and the 'worst' is a list of premium stuff (give or take one or two exceptions)

I think generally speaking these days you're hard pressed to find ANY car that doesn't just work properly 999 times out of a 1000.  not like earlier years when they were trying out a lot of new stuff, or things were being hand-assembled with half a sandwich left in the intake manifold as Clarkson likes to say

other differences will be things like customer service. well did you go to Mercedes in Leeds or Mercedes in Romford (not specific examples, just a point being made) maybe that guy had a flat tyre that morning or his missus was giving him grief the night before lol, it's basically an irrelevant factor especially for people that are thinking about the cars in terms of 2nd/3rd hand mid-mileage ownership because we never go to the stealership anyway
