One of the options I'm thinking about for my BMW 16v conversion into my Mk1 is using a hybrid gearbox, ie 4 synchro remote gearbox with a 3 synchro magic wand tail housing but using A+ gear kit. I know about the possible misalignment of the tail housing but have access to a monster size mill ( mine is too small ) so should be able to machine out any problems there. The main difference between the 4 synchro layshaft and the A+ seems to be the extra step. Am I correct in thinking it's just a case of relieving the main Web on the layshft side to account for the step?

I'm not familliar with exactly what you are doing but I did fit A+ gears to A type gearbox.

I made up this tool to relieve the step for the layshaft.

Just fit it to a hand drill, or if your more cautious a trap wrench and turn by hand.

Another option to that of Stoneface's is you can get A+ type Layshafts that have the step further back in order to fit the earlier all synchro gearboxes.

I've done this. Put A+ clubman s/c gear set into remote box with magic wand adapter plate.
Think I had to change the reverse gear if I remember.
