Hi,

First post here, but I'm sure it won't be my last.  I'm currently recommissioning an Austin 1100, 1971 with remote gear change.  I recently had the engine out for a refresh as well as changing the diff seals etc.

Having finally got the clutch working as it should I tried a test drive.  All reasonably smooth, ignoring the desperate need for an engine tune, but when I tried selecting reverse I pulled the gear lever across and it felt as though it went way past the 'slot' for reverse. When I moved it back towards the left it slotted fine.  Is there an adjustment I've not seen when reassembling to engine/gearbox/diff? Any suggestions as to what the issue may be? It did take a reasonable pull to get it to that point but I would have thought it shouldn't have the freedom to go that far.

When I had the engine out I re-shimmed the diff and replaced the worn parts but left the gearbox well alone.  It was working fine when I removed it - albeit I only drove it for a few miles.

I'm reasonably confident with the A-series engine having had an MG Midget for 30+ years but the front wheel drive set up is still very new to me so I am on a steep learning curve.

Many Thanks,

Dave

There are several Austin 1100 (ADO16) owners on the Mk1 Forum who should also be able to help:-

(The BMC 1100 has a slightly different type of remote change to Minis as it includes a rubber sandwich plate between the remote housing and gearbox).

You might find the Knuckle Joint that's (external) on top of the Diff Housing is loose or has worn splines.

Thanks both, I hadn’t realised the sandwich plate was only on the ADO16’s but will check out the external joints on the diff……
