Stuck Fuel Cap

Best Answer sarboykay , 11 October 2022 - 08:04 AM

The key (I've only got one) only turns very slightly even after a night of oil soaking. I'll give it a while and then try the hammer approach, luckily I always fancied an Aston style filler...

Hi all

So after 18 months on axle stands, I'm finally getting round to sorting the spi's cones and knuckles. Front done and as I start on the rear, I thought I'd do the fiddly one first and move the fuel tank to do so. But I can't get the key-operated fuel cap off; the lock won't rotate at all. I've loaded the lock with penetrating oil and will give it a day or so.

If it's stuck completely, has anyone got any ideas that don't involve me setting fire to myself?

As you have done with a lubricant and work it with the key. You may get lucky and it starts to move.
Worst case, use a suitable rod or punch on the key lock area and a goodly sized hammer and belt the lock innards into the tank. The remnants can be removed through the sender hole.

Does the key turn at all or is it that you can't rotate the cap?

If it's the lock itself, is the key worn can you try the other if you have two?

Sorted after three days of squirting engine oil into the lock with a syringe!

Excellent, Result. May I suggest a new locking cap, if the old one has stuck once it is likely to do so again. A new cap would be cheap insurance.
