Hi,

When my mini is parked in my garage for some time I always connect the battery to a trickle charger.

The charger shows green lights, so theoretically the battery should be charged and allright.
But often the starter has trouble turning the engine when it has been on the trickle charger (and the engine is cold)

after driving it and parking it and starting it again (with warm engine) the starter has no trouble turning the engine.

the trickle charger I originally bought for my motorbike, a long time ago.

can it be that the charger is not up to charging a car battery or should that make no difference?

cheers,

Is it a 12 volt battery charger?

Yes, I use my motorbike one for my minis.

Check the battery it could still be duff. Also check your connections to the battery and the earths.

When the connections are bad, shouldn't the starter always have trouble turning the engine?

The starter circuit is a sum of its parts. The resistances add up & if they cause enough voltage drop so the motor doesn't spin it has a low resistance that will make all those resistance hot spots even hotter & drain the battery even more.

A cold engine is always harder to turn over than a warm engine so a cold engine will always exacerbate battery and connection issues.
