I currently have my column stalks off the car. It is a bare shell rebuild and I will be making a new loom. So I have these on the bench with a 12v battery and a multi meter making a note of what each wire does.

I have 99% figured out all the wiring but am stuck on a loose black wire and the washer wiring.

There is a green/black wire coming out of the washer stalk. But of course when pressing this it needs to make a circuit and one wire can’t do that on its own. So I figured that when you press the stalk it competes a circuit, the final bit of the circuit perhaps being an earth?

But if the power gets to the stalk via the solid green wire, then I am not sure how the 12v supply gets to the washer stalk.

The loose black wire in the picture would make sense to earth to the column itself correct?

However, I was confused as this is sharing a connector with a green wire which I understand to be the 12v power source to that stalk. When I feed 12v to the stalk via the solid green wire, the black wire reads 12v too of course.

Where do I connect that black wire please?

And what is it that competes the circuit when I press the washer button?

Thanks in advance
Jeremy

This is whart I have established so far:

Solid Green - 12v in to stalk (black wire also comes off the green terminal and reads 12v)

Red/Green - wiper speed 1

Blue/Green - wiper speed 2

Brown/Green - park???? not sure how this works though

Black/Green - washer (but given only 1 wire runs up the stalk I am not clear how to complete the circuit)

Assume you have the wiring diagram in front of you? If not then that's probably a good place to familiarise yourself

The washer makes its circuit to earth after the pump so it is ignition switched live to the stalk (light green/orange - feeds the wipers AND washer) then live FROM the stalk to the pump (light green/black) then from pump  to earth black - this bit:

Not sure why you have solid green instead of light green/orange - can't really answer that as must be something different with your loom

This is quite a good explanation of the operation of the wipers including how the park is achieved:

Although its MGB really its a lucas wiper set up on a BL car.....

Thank you. I have looked at various wiring diagrams but my colours didn’t tie up well. I will work through this slowly in the morning. Appreciate the advice.
