Done that plenty of times and never had a problem once swapped them over. You haven’t just got a bad connection, or maybe another join that’s pulled out when messing around with them?

It's actually a generator light and has nothing to do with the ignition. It just comes on when you switch the ignition on, before you start the engine because it's not charging the battery.
It's possible that you've overloaded the power supply to the coil and blown the balast resistor. You need to disconnect the live feed to the coil and test if you have power there, preferably with some load. I use an old headlamp bulb as a test light to ensure the connection is capable of passing a decent amount of current.
That doesn't explain why you've lost your gen light though. It could be a coincidence but could be linked if you have damaged the ignition switch or comon output wiring from the switch.
The ignition system should not be fused.
The gen light probably is and will likely be on the same circuit as the fuel and temp gauges. If they are still working, first call is check the gen light bulb and power there. It's fed from the ignition switch, probably via a fuse, and earths through the alternator.
Good luck!

The ballast resistor is a thick pink/white wire in your wiring harness, that attaches to your coil
