This is a really dumb question perhaps, but im new to minis and not sure the history of my spi.  I think the engin has been out at some point.

Im trying to remove the ECU.  Easy you say.    Ive removed the 2 screws I can see, and its loose, but there seems to be a 3rd screw hidden on the far side under the brake cylinder - impossible to see or get a screwdriver on.

Is it normal to have a 3rd screw here?   Dont want to take the darn booster off just to get to it.

I don't think there's a screw there. Definitely not necessary to remove booster. There is a 'foot' on the ECU bracket which slips into a slot on the inner wing. The ECU should pull out towards the front of the car. There's lots of wiring around the bracket and it could be preventing the ECU from pulling out.

I think therefore my car has had some modifications at some point as there is defintely a screw holding it on in my case.  Possibly at the same time someone mounted 3 great big airhorns right in front of the ECU !

Thanks for the insight.  Appreciated.

Hi have just been to the garage to check. The ECU itself is mounted at two points onto a bracket. I can't see how you could access the second fixing below the servo and leave the bracket in situ, so I remove the bracket + the ECU as one unit.

There are three 'feet' on the bracket and these mount onto the inner wing. The 'feet' at 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock (as you look at the ECU) have fixings, and the 3 o'clock foot pointing towards the bulkhead is rubber tipped and slides into a slot on the inner wing. I can't see why anyone would want to replace this concealed mounting point with a fixing but you might just be unlucky.

Aha!  Thank you for checking for me, I have found the issue.   I did not realise it would be best to take off the bracket and ECU combined - why?  Because the top bracket bolt has been replaced by a pop-rivet, and painted over black, so I couldnt see the bracket does in fact come off.    Doh!

Now I know I will drill the rivet out and get the bracket / ECU off in one go.

Thanks again, great forum.   Fantastic to be able to keep these amazing cars on the road.

Next job Inlet manifold refurb / new pipes  !

Pleased you were able to sort it. Just take care inserting the bracket back into the slot as there is a lot of wiring in that area. Have fun with the manifold.
