I have taken my engine apart and want to paint it. I would like to avoid spray paint as much as possible. I have been looking at Hammerite and can see on this forum that a lot of people have used it with succes on the block and head. But what about the gearbox of aluminium? My first thought wold be either Hammerite with metal primer or maybe their new Ultimate version. I just can't figure out if the water based Ultimate is resistant to heat, oil and gasoline as the origin version is?
For the engine block I would like a bright red and not sure if Hammerite smooth red will give me that or if I will be better of with brake caliber paint?

Hammerite smooth will be fine, if it comes off with the heat from your head/block, the paint will be the least of your worries. It’ll be fine on the box too.

For the aluminum parts I'm more concerned with oil and gasoline if I was to use the Ultimate version that is water based but also can stick to anything other than cobber.
I'm sure the normal stuff will work for the iron parts.

I got a reply from Hammerite. They don't recommend the Ultimate version for the gearbox application. So I have to use their metal primer or some other solution.

I would generally prime the aluminium parts with etch primer (an epoxy primer with acidious portion) that slightly etches the surface and hence will stick like the proverbial on a shovel.
Then apply the top coat (I use standard enamel paint)

I've just redone my block and head after doing it with halfords own (terrible) paint. The block was de-coked first as it was in for machining, which got all the old paint and grease off, and left the metal ready. Used Simoniz black gloss engine enamel - one can did the engine, head and alternator mount with 4 coats.
