I’m hoping to view a Mini this weekend which currently has 13” deep dish wheels with 175/50/13 tyres, I don’t know the make, width or offset of the wheels yet. The car also has some wide arches and again I’m not sure which ones but my Internet searches make me think they are Group 5.

If I do buy it I’d be looking at possibly swapping the wheels out for 10”, I realise the discs will probably need changing to a smaller size but what else would I need to consider? I’m assuming the front wings have already been cut to accommodate the 13s so what size wheel/tyre combo would I require to fill the arches?

Any other pros and cons of the swap would be appreciated.

It all depends on what has been done to fit the 13s.

rack may have been changed for a sports pack one. Or it may have had the travel reducers fitted to have the same result. If it is original 13 then it will have had the suspension raised and the metal work cut and re fitted. If it had been done as after market and lowered it will have even more metal cut out.

discs need identifying as they may be 7.5 or 8.4 to even any other size depending on what has been done.

Thanks, it’s an an ‘84 so I presume it would originally have had 12s.

To fill the arches you will need 6 x 10" wheels, deeper dish with the offset in link below would be ideal:-

GENUINE MINILITE 6x10" ALLOY WHEEL. DEEP DISH

https://www.minispar...C-21A1902A.aspx

Cheaper alloys in similar 6 x 10 sizes/offsets are also available.

Fit 165/70 x 10 tyres and change to the smaller Cooper 'S' type disc brakes. As long as you keep the existing wheel arch extensions (or similar) the amount the front wings have been cut for clearance should not be an issue as it will not be seen and you need the extra clearance for 6 x 10 wheels on full steering lock anyway.

Very few people alter or swap the steering rack for fitting aftermarket 13" wheels as the factory did, so I doubt that will be an issue with a reduced lock.

After the swap adjust ride height to suit if required and get tracking, etc checked and adjusted as required.

pics of you current setup, and of the style of wheel you want to fit would help,

also its worth mentioning that the actual diameter of 165/70/10 and 175/50/13s is vertually the same, a lot if people assume they change the gearing but really they dont. so no speedo calibration to worry about, and they will fit the arches radialy,

if you don't fancy swapping the brakes over, JBW do a set of 5x10's they state will fit over the 8.4" setup

Is that reg date or made date? 84 was the introduction of 8.4 discs but it might even have drums on it.

there is a 4% difference but car will feel quicker as less weight to spin up with 10" wheels

I think you'll have to see it in the flesh, but piccies and/or more details from the seller may help. It could have been through several incarnations since '84 & have any combo of parts. As said, you should be able to find 10's that fill the arches, but being able to replace the arches could be more satisfying for handling.

Thank you, that’s a great help and Minilites are one of the wheels I like

Appreciate the info, I hadn’t looked into diameter differences.
