Hello,

1993 Mini Cooper SPI

When I switch the side lights on (first click) without the ignition on both the side light bulbs and dipped beams come on. The second click just gives slightly brighter lights. Is this correct?

I had the understanding that with the ignition off you could switch the sidelights on and leave just the small side light bulbs on.

For info I have replaced both the dip/dip relay and headlight switch.

Any suggestions why it would do this. I have studied the wiring diagram and am baffled.

Many thanks.

No

The idea is to stop you driving on just sidelights so...

1st position of the rocker gives sidelights, 2nd gives full brightness dip beam - unless the ignition is on, when 1st position also gives dip beam at about half the brightness.

We do have some topics that mention how to remove the relay & replace it with jumper wires. It might not be the relay.

But with ignition off and on the first click I have sidelights and dipped beam on?

In the first post here you will see the wiring for Dim Dip  95- 96 SPi main lighting circuit.

https://www.theminif...agrams-redrawn/

If you have dim dip with the light switch in the first position and ignition off the first thing I would do is remove relay to see if dim dip goes off. If it does I would check for 12volts on green wire to relay. If there is 12 volts I would check faulty ignition switch or back feed through aftermarket stereo.

Removed the relay and the sidelights work on their own with the ignition off. The moment a plug the relay back in dipped beam comes on.

Not sure what’s powering dipped beam with the ignition off!???
