Can anybody help with an electrical issue with my starter solonoid? when i try to start the car all i get is a click from the solonoid?  i should add this is a 1968 mk2 998 cooper and i've had nothing but problems with this car since a full body

and engine rebuild.  i have had it running fine out on the road but when the cold snap started it was tucked away in the

garage with the battery disconnected and put under the car cover.  when going back to get it out on the road the battery was dead, so it was charged up but after a day on charge the battery still had no life so i took it back to the shop and because they could not get it sorted the gave me a new one.  Great ! end of problems, but no! now all i get is the clicking

whei turn the key?  i have checked all connections and have even replced the solonoid with a spare one i had.......but it's

just the same!         can anyone help as i'm no electrician.

cheers Andy

Have you had the new battery checked? Have you put the new battery on charge?

new does not mean fully charged nor in good condition.

and check all your earth connections. Paint is not a good conductor.

are you Positive or Negative earth? I would check the earth conections. then boost your starting system in order to get the engine running, once running check the voltage at Dynamo and the battery should be around 13 to 14 volts. if not your dynamo needs looking at

try putting a jump lead from the engine to something that earths on teh body, it could be the earth strap its self, a sign of this is your heater valve cable will more that likely be melted.

if that dosnt do it, short out the two terminals on teh solinoid, see if it starts then, if it does you have 2 bad solinoids.

All good advise here, one other thought is are you sure the starter motor is not faulty and the connections are clean and tight.

Full body work usually means fresh paint and poor earths. Check earth connections battery to boot floor and wing to engine.  Turn on head lights and see if they go out when solenoid clicks.

Hi.

I had a similar problem on my 1967 Morris Minor Traveller had to call out the AA at a motorway service station having stopped to fill up. The car would not start just the clicking noise. The AA gentleman did a quick check of the car, went to the back of his van got out a 4 foot length of scaffolding pole, gave the starter motor a thump with it. Problem solved, the starter motor had got jammed for some unknown reason and it never happened again in the next five years I owned that car. He did say why did I not use the starting handle. :shy: I hate to admit it but I totally forgot that I could have used it as I had never had to use it in the previous three years that I had owned my Moggy, so out of sight (in the back under the load space) out of mind as they say.

My girlfriend now wife still reminds me of it. If there is a problem with the Mini she just says starting handle. :D

Or has the festive season got in the way
