I am sure you will all agree when looking at the attached picture, that the Mini Spare Pipecross filter that arrived today for my Hif44 is a very bad design.

a) there is no hole in the thick rubber gasket for the bolt that holds the filter together

and

b) if I was to drill a hole in this rubber gasket there would be less than 1mm of gasket left between the head of the bolt and the inlet hole leaving me with no seal

So while Mini Spares have a query out with Pipecross, I thought I would get advice on a good quality, slim as possible air filter.

Looking at all the pictures online, I felt this was about a slim as you can get, leaving as much clearance as possible between the air filter and the bulkhead.

What do you reccommend as a slim filter please (on the basis this Pipecross unit isnt going to be right for me)?

Thanks for your help.

That is a poor design! I know the K+N ones have bit spot welded inside so that the bolt doesn't go through the plate. I'd be going for a MED stub stack that comes with an ITG filter but can be tight on the bulkhead. It depends on the front subframe you have. You could get an adjustable engine steady to give a bit more clearance.

I'd fit a 1990 onwards subframe to give an extra 1/2 inch or so clearance to the bulkhead

Drastic, bad advice and not needed - just do what Alex above says.

Med itg kit is the best for a ‘44.

I have one myself which I used before I got twin carbs.  I just fitted it as is with some silicone and got a seal.  If you aren't happy with that idea perhaps grind the bolt head down by half and rout out a rebate in the rubber for the reduced bolt head using a small drill bit.

Med itg kit is the best for a ‘44.

Which will need an adjustable engine steady, and then the exhaust manifold adjusted for the difference in angles (then, possible sealing issues) . The better option is to fit the late carb type subframe (assuming single bolt towers) however to each thier own.

An HIF44 doesn't fit using standard manifold insulator (spacer) on an alloy manifold (on a pre 1990 engine) I have tried and it was far too tight to fit, so I had to use the later subframe.

I think the MED design with the ITG filter is the best that you can use. I have one and even though there is quite a bit of induction noise, I like it a lot.  What you might do is to try and find one of the earlier MSC HIF intake manifolds that will give you a little more room.

Thanks Mini Mad. Sometimes the obvious solutions are staring you in the face. For now, I have decided to stick with the Pipercross unit.

I have machined down the head of the nut, will loctite it in place, and have also removed a small amount of material from the gasket.

With a Mini Spares inlet, a 5mm spacer, Hif44 and this air filter I have plenty of room between the carb and air filter and the car chassis/bulkhead.

I have an ITG filter on my HIF44. Think it's from MED. I also run a stub stack inside it.
