To be fair, I think the bosozuku movement actually originated on motorcycles and then got copied to cars, it's not so dissimilar to the current trend of café racer cars! 

This may not be accurate but I remember hearing it on a Japanese vehicle documentary I saw years ago.

To be fair, I think the bosozuku movement actually originated on motorcycles and then got copied to cars, it's not so dissimilar to the current trend of café racer cars! 

This may not be accurate but I remember hearing it on a Japanese vehicle documentary I saw years ago.

May have been jumping on that band wagon a little too, but I think the fact is still accurate.

As i understand it the Bosozuku were gangs of ex-kamikaze pilots turned bike riders post WW2 who kind of felt somewhat at a loose end as it were, hence just riding about aimlessly causing trouble

 

the style which came from that (exaggerated loud exhausts, extended seat backs and so on) then got adopted by non-gang-members just as a style of modding

 

sometimes slammed, sometimes "stanced" (eugh.. cringing just typing that word) but mostly just really exaggerated body kits, long exhausts and silly big rear wings

 

(and from time to time, vans that look like a Manga optimus prime)

 

I can't imagine that star shape does much for the flow of exhaust gasses, if it's a real exhaust

You must be new to the internet then. As other have posted, Bōsōzoku vehicles have been around for decades and the most extreme have been posted on car forums as long as they've existed.

If you don't mind me saying the job of Kamikaze pilot wasn't known for its pension plan, so I'm not sure how many gangs there would have been.
