Hi,

We are almost ready to install our fletcher rad but have a potentially very basic/newbie question for you all.

The drain plug at the bottom...I see some people use this to add a temperature switch for an electric fan?

So my question is, is that a specialist/custom requirement based on your particular car? We have a standard 1992 rover mini 1275 engine, single carb.

I have assumed we don't have to do this extra and simply install the rad with the standard hoses, and leave the drain plug alone and let it do its original job.

Sorry if really simple question but just a little pointer or guidance would be much appreciated. Feel free to explain as simply as you want!

thanks in advance.

I use it for a thermostat fan switch, but then I only have an electric fan for the radiator. If your old rad has a temperature switch, the drain plug hole is the only option to replace it.

Can I ask which switch you bought, the M14 we have seems to be slightly too large for the fletcher? cheers

It was a Mahle switch, can't remember exactly which model it was (bought it a few years ago) but definitely M14 thread.

thanks, so minisport, when I phoned them said it doesn't need one, but if we did have one on the old rad we do need one on this one? I appreciate it a basic question but getting myself confused so trying to simplify things a bit but bringing it back to basics! cheers

If your car Has the additional fan why not wire it to a switch on the dash, thus leaving the drain plug sealed?

Mine was done like that before I bought it. Much better as I believe the original rad switch came on when 95+ degrees were reached. Only ever used mine in very hot stop/start traffic conditions
