I`ve currently got the dashboard out as I'm doing a centre binaccle conversion so I thought I'd tidy up the switch panel and cables. In taking out the old choke cable I found its been bodged in and the plastic has snapped as it came out. Reading other threads on here it seems that it's been bodged in as it's a twist choke cable and the switch panel has a D shaped hole for the ratchet type.

My question is what I would need to do to use the older style choke and heater cables which I think would look better with the retro look I'm going for?

The car was originally a 93 mayfair

I like the older style of cables too.  You can pick up the older type of switch panel on Ebay easily.

Shouldn't be too hard to make any combo work. A file, or washer, would  help cover any mismatch & there's brackets fixing the fascia, by the cables, to the rail that can be unbolted, modified or new ones fabricated.

I reckon bowden cables work best for the choke. Fit 'em long & you can tweak the bend/ loop to get the friction just right to hold.

Sorry if it's obvious but do the old style cables work in the same way? Why do they need a different switch panel?

The old Mk1 style are mechanically the same as all the cabled choke/heater that connected to carbs and front heater valves irrespective of style (rubber knob with 'fire' or red and blue arrows).  I am not sure if these will fit injection systems or later heater valves for twin point minis, as I have an older mark 3, so can't advise.

If the switch panel has the two circular holes at left and right sides for mounting they should at least fit without getting a new panel.

Like Ethels says, even if you have this later type mini you can probably fabricate something to make them control the gear they are supposed to in the engine bay

So having spent a few weeks away from the car I've now got round to refitting the lower dash rail and I'm going to see if I can use a washer behind the d shaped hole to hold the choke cable.

Hopefully that will work but if not can someone point me to the correct switch panel for a twist type choke cable?
