I have bought an engine to put in my Mini Minus and the number is 12H D09 129/03. Can anyone tell me exactly what I have bought? The valves seem large and completely fill the combustion chambers. If it`s just a cooking engine what kind of a cam could I fit to give it a bit of pep please?

Looks like it's 1988 metro standard engine, but it might have had a big valve head fitted.  Measure the valve diameters to be sure  33mm inlet and 29.3mm exhaust are standard.

12H will be a 1300 engine.

How much is "a bit" ?  ...  A minispares Evo 100 will give you a nice bit.  An old 731 will give you plenty, and a 544 will probably give too much

IIRC the D09 129/03 is an innocent engine.

Thank you, I`ll go for the evo. Yes, how much is a "bit" just like how long is a piece of string. The chap I bought the engine from for a darn good price (to me) knew very little about it beyond that it came out of his project and has a straight cut gearbox. He was selling all the non standard parts of his Mini to raise funds to buy a daily driver as he is currently without transport. If you could see the gorgeous new build country house he lives in you`d wonder how he could possibly be short of loot but hey ho.

My head does have larger inlet valves at a tad under 36mm, there is literally no room for anything larger. The cam may well be different from standard so I am going to give the engine a run as it stands after I have tidied it up quite a bit. Cheers for all your advice.
