Engine is not sounding healthy. I have water going into cylinder's 2 and 3 so I suspect a head gasket leak. but that's a different thing. Car recently developed a horrid ticking noise. I mean there had been the regular ticking noise for a while (probably need to adjust the tappets), but this is far louder. And it seems to be coming from the water pump area. Figured the water pump bearing must be shot...

So I've taken the rad off since Im in the process of removing the head, but then, when spun by hand the water pump seems just fine, no noticeable resistance or noise.

So what would be the next thing to suspect? Broken timing chain tensioner perhaps? The ticking sound is definitely coming from that vicinity.

If it is the timing chain tensioner, is that something that can be replaced with the engine in the car? In particular the main pulley. wondering if its possible to get a torque wrench in there....

Thoughts?

Anyway here's a video of the engine running

I would certainly say tappets need a tweak..

Cam lobe/followers?  Wear of the folowers would lead to slack tappets and wear on the cam lobes would lead to reduced valve lift and power as well.

I has an annoying ticking sound. It was more random than constant. Turned out I had to much camshaft float and led to catching on the oil seal thrower which is inside the timing cover

If you're planning on checking out the timing area etc, then take a look at the oil seal thrower to check for damage.

I couldn`t get the video to load up but my first area to look would be the bottom pulley as it may be loose and that would make a clacking noise as its bashing the keyway.

Well, I think I found the source of the ticking noise!

Somehow the adjuster nuts on two of the rockers had completely come off! No idea how that had happened.

Looks like intake on cylinder 2 and Exhaust on cylinder 3? What damage might have occurred from this? Haven't taken the head off yet, but should I be budgeting for set of new pushrods? or cam followers? or rockers? Could the valves have been damaged?

and maybe I should think of adding spring washers to all the adjuster nuts so that this wont happen again?

Those are both exhausts.  Put them back and reset the clearance and make sure they're tight (and check the rest)  Spring washers shouldn't be necessary.  See how it runs then.  If it still rattles then there might be damage to the rods or followers.

Slight gap between the exhaust manifold and the head aswell.....

Certainly cause at least one issue......

But well done for finding the issue..

Just nipp the nuts up and check them after first couple of hot runs...
Stay positive thinking... it will be fine... it will be fine.... it will be fine...
