Hi all,

For a long time, I have been enjoying my mini spi now. But after an engine overhall this winter, it is running horrible. Starting the engine takes around 6-8 turns while in past only 1-2 turns. Then when moment/acceleration is needed, engine dies and wont come up again until 30 sec later. (like the gasoline needs to fape) Also on the highway running 80 steady, randomly engine dies. Feel like over fuelling and I have to wait 30 sec to be able to start the engine again.

So I hope people here can help me sort out the problem.

Specs:

Stage 3 head SPI specs

SPI KENT CAM

Checked so far:

Dual plug ECU swapped for a Cooper S ECU Dual plug

New wiring loom ECU

New vacuum lines of 3mm tube (multiple times)

New vacuum tube to brake pod

Checked fual trap. (swaped)

Swaped injector for spare

New Temp coolant temp sensor

New lambda sensor (gave problem on hessitation so swapped to old one and runs way better)

Swapped stepper motor as old on was corroded.

Removed Cat

Manifold exhaust fully sealed -> no leaks

Extra earth wire

MAP measured with external vacuum meter and displays same values as MemsFCR

When I read the information from the ECU with MemsFCR; (WHen hot)

idle 850

Map 43

Stepper 35

Lambda stuck on 465 (checked with multimeter and jumps up and down low - High etc)

Ignition advance 12-14 (jumps around these values)

So the weird thing is that at random moments the SPI (i think) overfuels and thus dies.

Does anyone has a suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

See the thread below which is similar.

https://www.theminif...ady-high-840mv/

in this thread I posted.

The error some make is rushing to replace the sensor without checking the wiring to it, one of the larger specialists did exactly this with mine.  On mine the wiring had rubbed through and broken behind the throttle body, I believe that this is quite common. The break meant that the supply to the sensor was intermittent.

The second time I had a similar issue the sensor was damaged by a failed coolant temp sensor.  Again this is mentioned in the threads Matthewsdad posted.

hi Humph, thanks for your quick reply. I already read through that post but I already eliminated the wiring and played with blocking the fuel line to see if the lambda is working.

Also for wiring issues, i changed my full wiring loom for a minispares new one and either before or after the swap, no improvements can be found....

(I had to change the loom either way as the previous owner soldered and changed a lot on it, and due to corrosions it reached it end of life.)

I also swapped the temp sensor with another one I had laying around. No effect.

Same as the ECU, swapped, no effect.

Have you considered changing the fuel pipes over as the new fuel, additives these days eat away at the rubber pipes on minis?

My car is a 98 JDM SPI with ignition coil, I had similar problem as yours and I replaced the crank sensor and problem gone.

What about not too much fuel but too less.Check the fuel supply. Is the pump running? What if you directly supply the pump with current? What about the line pressure?

Normally the pump is 30 years old, a good time to die.

Thanks for all your replys

Crank sensor has been replaced and is new.

Fuel lines have been checked and no blockage to tank.

Maybe indeed the pressure is not sufficient enough. Will double check it this week with a pressure sensor. Thanks for the tips.

Would it run rich if the fuel pressure was too low ?

If so, why ?

Fuel will not be sprayed in but drops out of the imjection nozle. Therefore it is not burned completely. But may be  a matter of battery and generator together. Not enough current when idling.Altogether there is not enough information for diagnosis. He only can test one after the other.
