Hi all,
I'm not a fan of the SPi system and want to change to carb.....any ideas how to get through an MOT? I understand if I fit an older engine it's all good, but how could I convince the tester?

Section 8:2 of the MOT testers manual says that vehicles used before 1 September 2002 with a different engine must be tested to the requirements to which is older, the vehicle or the engine.

There must be some work around this conversion to a carb, you need to convince the tester as to the age of the engine, the onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove the age of the engine.

It appears it is up to the tester if he accepts your presentation, but I am sure the more inventive could produce a "ghost" engine number that can be checked back to be an engine that was originally fitted with a carb.

OF COURSE I WOULD NEVER CONDONE SUCH DECEPTION.

Good luck.

I'm sure the "more inventive" would have discovered that you can't change the engine number on a v5 without a receipt for its purchase .... goddamit

And.....they would have found out you need a v5 to get an engine number plate made !!!!

So I have a 92 SPI which is converted to carb and for legitimate conversion it will be down to when your car was built.

There is a document which shows from which point engine number onwards regarding how it has to be tested regarding emissions. Ie CO and also whether the CAT has to be in place.

I will have to dig out the data but it is about on here and online, I just need to dig it out as I needed to be ready for the “conversation” with the tester but none needed as based from engine number.

According to my MOT inspector there are no matches in the analyser database for any pre-95 classic mini engine. (with the last carb engined minis being produced in 1994) These are the only classic mini engines that appear in the in-service emissions book, (which is available on line I'll post the link to it when I find it again)

Mini Model Code XN

1.3l Auto TBi Engine Code X Serial No 059845 onwards
1.3l Manual TBi Engine Code X Serial No 059822 onwards
1.3l TBi Engine Code Y Serial No 060488 onwards
1.3l MPi Engine Code Z

Thanks all.....I think the most "legitimate" option may be to find an older block with either a 12A2A or 12A2B engine number.....let's see how rare they are....minimail may be getting an order ;)

What engine number do you have? Doesn’t need to be to the last digit publicly
