Hi All,

As has been mentioned in numerous posts in this forum and others the danger of using 2K paints and that very strict safety measures and the proper equipment must be used.

My question is this, referring back to the good old days of paints containing lead and the precautions you must take now when rubbing down or removing it, what are the hidden dangers, if any, of rubbing down 2K paints and do you need special air fed breathing equipment or just a good filter breathing mask?

Regards Paddy

A standard dust mask is a minimum requirement for rubbing down 2k paint as a one off / hobby job . A higher grade should be required if you are doing  it for a living. Air fed masks are only used when spraying.

Most commercial set up’s will use a dust extraction unit to keep the issue of dust down in the working environment for cleanliness.

You can keep the dust down if it’s an issue by wet flatting the paint …..wet & dry

The danger of 2k is when it is being sprayed and in atomised form .

You can brush paint 2k if you wish with out any of the dangers apart from the flammable side .

Hi mm man,

Thank you for your pearls of wisdom. I recently had some paint work done by a body shop and they used 2K epoxy primer. I now know that if in future I need to do any body work that might involve that area I can do so safely

Epoxy doesn't contain isocyanates which is the stuff that does the damage

Never assume always check the makers spec sheets.

Most if not all are available on the interweb.
