I feel like I have read this previously but can not find the thread.

In the midst of a full MPi resto.  Removing the rusty nuts of the arch fittings has resulted in the studs coming out of the arch itself.

I know there is now a (very expensive) stainless stud inserts for this application now but just wondered if there was an alternative.

My thinking is using threaded inserts in the arches. to then use a bolt through the body work into the threaded insert . this 'should' reduce and water ingress and problem of rusty nuts.(unless you buy the stainless kit at over £100 for the 20 studs)

I know there is not much 'meat' on the arches, so getting the inserts in securely is the problem.

SO

Has anyone done this or had experience of this.

I know the BOM lads did this with project binkey but this was on custom built arches, so i am after real world actual MPi experience.

Any advice is welcome

Chris

I think smiffys bits were doing a cheaper option.

I had issues with my Sportspack bolts also. I tried bonding in new rod etc but inevitably they came out again after a period of time. I thought there had to be a better way so eventually I tracked down 'hanger bolts' (I think that's what they were called) which are pretty similar to the standard sportspack bolts but much much cheaper. Arches haven't fell off since

Thanks for the replys.
I havent used, but have seen the hanger bolts and the idea looks sound but when you tighten the nuts, to me, it looks like all the stress it trying to pull the screw out of the wheel arch fixing.
If you think about the 'proper' fixings.
You can only tighten the nut until the flange is against thr bodywork so tgis 'shouldnt' pull the fixing out of the bodywork.
Also found these. I know there not stainless but there also not 100quid.

bit late to the party but im also looking and have learned that genuine replacement Sportpack arches have a threaded brass insert and use a threaded bit of bar http://www.minispare.../ZUA000250.aspx

With that in mind i found these and wondered if they'd be close to whats required

https://www.theinser...stic_headed.php

they are available in differing lengths and also with different sizes and thicknesses of collar so shouldnt be stressing the plastic when tightened, like the original studs?

bit of stainless M5 and 20 flanged stainless nuts and robert is your mothers brother?
