Hi TMF,

Here we have for sale my 1980 mini clubman (saloon).

As you will see from the photos this is absolutely a project, comprising of a bodyshell (rolling), parts and engine. It’s clear this is best suited to an enthusiast, so hence me posting to the forum first 😊

I’m really hoping the link to the pics work… I couldn’t get Imgur to register so I’m using postimage…

Some background:

Having always wanting to own a Mini, specifically a Clubman, I set out to find a project in 2014 with the view to building a ‘restomod’ take on a 1275 GT. I managed to find this, which was built as is by the former owner, a professional coachbuilder, originally for his daughter who then changed her mind on owning a classic, so he decided to sell. He had worked on Mini’s for years and knows the corrosion pitfalls with roof gutter and A panels etc, therefore decided to ‘de-seam’ the car. As he was a coachbuilder the metal work was done to a high standard. I bought the project in October 2014, but unfortunately my plans for the mini never got off the ground over the past 9 years with house moves, false starts etc and the lock-up being located 30 miles from my recent home. I am now losing the lockup and the reality of having a young family and limited time means it’s time to sell.

To be crystal clear, I have done nothing to the car, parts or engine since taking receipt 9 years ago. The only thing I have done is add other wheels and tyres (as the tyres on the original 10’s had collapsed and gone solid over the past 9 years in storage) for transporting to different location and turned the engine by hand occasionally over the years.

Please note, I’ve included photos for both its current condition and its condition when I bought it in 2014, this will hopefully give prospective buyers a better feel for the car prior to viewing.

Info:

Bodyshell (Rolling shell)

As mentioned the shell was de-seamed by a professional coachbuilder, where the standard of work is really good. The bodywork has surface rust present as it’s a Mini that sat for 9 years since having work done, but it has zero real rust/rot. This is a solid car that will need minimal prep for paint (excluding the front subframe). The rear subframe was freshly powder coated 10 years back, but the front subframe is rough and will certainly need blasted and painted/coated. The steering rack is in place, and there are 12in wheels on which are spaced with a few washers to prevent rubbing on the rear (arches are standard, not tubbed) to enable a rolling shell for transporting purposes.

Parts

There are a number of parts with the car, of which I don’t have a detailed inventory, its more of a ‘job lot’ where I do believe there is the majority of what’s required to build, but some may not be suitable to meet the needs of a the future build, i.e. some parts look past their best, but there are also some new and refurbed parts. See pics.

I’ve taken photos of as much as I can and I will leave them spaced out in the container for prospective buyers, but I wont be itemising each part. Its worth noting there are a set of minilight style alloys (no tyres) as well as original steel 10’s (tyres knackered) and the 12’s that are on the car.

Engine

The engine numbers suggest it’s a 998 engine, however the previous owner told me that the crank and rods were swapped to the 1098 to allow for better torque. He also mentioned that he stripped and rebuilt it (no machining, just a strip and check) 9 years back. I can’t confirm either of these things. Engine comes as per pic. It does turn by hand.

Location:

The car will now be stored at a ‘self-storage’ place near Aberdeen airport (one of these shipping container type places) and can be viewed by appointment from Tuesday 21st March onwards. The facility is open  Monday to Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm and Saturday: 8:00am - 12:00pm, but please note that the facility states that ‘Last entry 20 minutes before closing time’ so prospective buyers would need sufficient time to view (and load to trailer) prior to closing, so please keep this in mind if contacting me.

Selling info:

Looking for £4,000 for the lot. Open to offers.

V5 present

Please be mindful that this is a project car and it wasn’t my work prior, I’ll only be able to answer any questions from an ‘as is’ perspective.

Please get in touch on 07727061366 (sensible, genuine enquiries only please).

Cheers

Mike Murray
