Hi,

So who actually does make the right rubber cones these days ?  There is an interesting and conflicting claim on both the Minispares and Minisports websites....

https://www.minispar...px|Back to shop

https://www.minispor...nsion-cone.html

What are the opinions here?Who is right ? I have a spring conversion fitted by previous owner which I want to remove.  The ride is gloriously smooth,  but it handles like a float on corners.  Also want to reduce the ride height. Back to rubber cones is the way to go I reckon.

Cheers

The MiniSpares ones (as linked) are made on the original tooling and with the original spec materials. There was a short time the material changed that was not good. In the UK by M-Part.

These claims are confusing - I bought the mini sport ones - changed all 4. The ride is good and it has not sagged. Been on two years and 6,000 miles. I am perfectly happy with them.

I’ve also fitted the Minisport cones and have 5,000 miles on them in 3 years and I’m perfectly happy and from the initial settling the car is still the same ride height

The mini sport ones may well work okay BUT they aren't to original design and specifications of rubber, therefore are a total gamble on if they'll give the correct ride or not.

I got them from Moss. They went on the car OK but I haven't driven it yet (needs a bit more work still...)

With no wish whatsoever to open the can of worms with the usual Mspares/Msport debate, I’ve Owned a new 1275gt bought in 80 and owned for ten years all original and then a 75 1275gt with all new suspension and rubbers with the Msport cones there was no significant difference in the ride they were both sort of just about ok with the imo awful original shock absorbers fitted. In 2019 I fitted the kyb gas adjust shocks all round which did significantly transform the ride a marked degree and saved my ailing back. So having driven on both types of cones I would say fit either type but buy some decent shock absorbers as well,

How many mini owners today would you say have any idea of what the correct mini ride is like?

My guess would not be very many people. I must mention driving the new old mini in 2018 after 28years and being shocked at what a spine jolting, deafening, death trap (by todays standards) they are, but I bloody well love driving the thing around and is one of the best things I’ve ever done!

The politics and smoke screens of owning (formerly expired) patents aside, I do know factually that those Cones that come from M-parts are made on the original Dunlop Tooling and use the same Rubber 'recipe' that Dunlop used in the Rover FAM3968, all from Rover Drawings and to Rover Specification.

Anything else is an after market copy or version or variation of that.

M-Parts are not far from me near Llandow Racecourse, South Wales.

Llandow race track was so rough in the 60s, that 10 laps removed every trace of loose rust.

...even back in the day for that matter. Not many of us who were enthusiastic about driving them bought 'em new, or replaced the suspension rubber, when we had important stuff like wide wheels & noisy exhausts to buy.
