I would like to to remove my car's engine.

Is it actually possible to remove the driveshafts from the inboard CV joints so i don't have to drain the engine oil?

I seem to remember there was a special tool to extract driveshaft from the CV joint. Has anyone ever used one?

Was it worth it over the laying down while using a hammer and long screwdriver?

You don't need to drain the oil, it just saves you a bit of weight if you do. There is a special tool but you can also improvise one. The main thing is just not to apply leverage to the aluminium case except where the bolts are for which you need some kind of an offset. My tool was too bendy to lever the pot joint off by itself but having wedged it in place it was safe to then bash a cold chisel in.

You can just split the inner ball joint just don’t lose any balls and try and put them back together the same way.

I have never seen the tool for extracting the drive shaft from the inner CV available.

There is not much to be gained by leaving the oil in and if there is an issue you will end up with oil everywhere.
However, the tool to extract the shaft from the pot joint is tool 18g1243.
I actually made one a couple of weeks ago and it worked well (except the numpty who last did the pot joint boots did one side by securing the small end of the boot to the shaft instead of the inner joint thus rendering the tool unusable on that side).
I think they are on ebay. Google 18g1243.
