Hi Guys I/m Glenn.

I have repainted, recarpeted, reupoltered now the engine has a knock in it.

Not such a big deal as now I get to reco the engine and ad a bit of grunt.

QUESTION............ Am I able to separate the engine from the gearbox while it is still in place?

I watched a few vids of engine removal and gearbox separation and it looks fairly easy to leave the gearbox connected to the car and remove the engine.

I would appreciate your experienced comments. Thanks, Glenn.

I guess it's possible, but it can't be worth the hassle. How will you thoroughly clean the gearbox with it in place?

Would not waist my time doing it. All out together.

Don’t bother. You can take the whole unit out in a couple of hours. Trying to just take the block off would likely double that.

If you manage to do it, make sure that you video it.  It will be a "First", and you might get in the Guinness Book of Records.

I'm no expert but im guessing cleaning gunk from the inside is somewhat more important than what it looks like on the outside

Considering the engine and box share oil and therefore various deposits can come from a number of places

I know it has been done, but it really is not worth the hassle.

If the engine needs 'refreshing', you can bet the diff will need a new diff pin/planet wheels and it's then an easy job.

Do it as a single lump in tried and trusted fashion. If you did manage to split it the car it would be hell of a job trying access and the bolts and then oil is going t drip everywhere anyway as you lift it out.

On a conventional in-line engine and gearbox then yes, but a transverse Mini set up, as has been said already. not worth it.

What sort of Mini do you have ?

If it's a Classic, you'll need to take the engine and gearbox out as a unit, then separate the gearbox off it.

If you have a later day BMW MINI, I'm not sure with these, but I think the gearbox can be removed with the engine in place.
