I have a 998 1990 City and while changing my head gasket because of a break in the gasket between cylinders 1 & 2, I discovered some small springs in my oil (see attached image). Can anyone tell if this piston ring, gearbox related or something else? Not got round to putting the car back together yet to do a compression test and try starting it but does anyone have any initial ideas?

Looks like the spring from inside an oil seal. Primary gear seal, crank pulley seal or drive shaft oil seal I'd imagine.

It looks to me like swarf, from the drilling of a hole.

Looks long so clutch oil seal. Don’t think the output shaft ones would look that long.

Looks to me they are two different sizes. The larger one clutch oil seal the smaller one output shaft of even possibly timing cover oil seal. I would certainly want to strip down as much as possible to see where they came from what damage has been done and what caused them to fail.

How long have they been in the bottom of the gear box one wonders.

considering the length of the springs arent the same its a bit hard to tell. Drive shaft oil seal is a pretty decent bet, but it does seem a bit long for that.

Personally i wouldn't feel good about starting the engine up without opening it up to inspect what else could have gotten lose.
