It's the fresh air supply for the cabin. On later models this was moved to the inner wing area which causes rot from water and road salt Go to the full post

Hi,

I've seen some early Mini's with a round cut out on the inner drivers side of the engine bay that looks like an air duct, I see some cars with the black hose attached and others without.  What is it's purpose as the radiator is on the opposite side and why do some owners chose not to have it attached?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

The hose often referred to as the Elephant Trunk goes into the heater on early Minis with a fresh air heater to supply it with air to heat.
