This is a thing that I am planning for when I get closer to finishing my van (lots of rust and an auto transmission rebuild). I will be running a 1275 auto (was spi) with a HS6 carb. I am wanting a filter which will keep as much dust out as possible and reliably so it will need to be a paper type filter. I was thinking about using a Donaldson cyclopac filter but I think that might change the fuel economy too much, I read a comment from Spider about that.

The other option I thought of is to create my own housing which isn't too complicated if I make a flat plate bolted to the carb but it would need a smallish filter. I also don't like that when the element is removed dust could fall down into the inlet.

Most of my driving is in the "city" driving to work however I will be setting this mini up to do trips 800km inland where there is heaps of red dust which gets everywhere.

If I could find a simple housing which would bolt on I would be interested but I haven't found anything common, I found some weird volvo ones.

Also I think it would be best to use a rocker cover with a vent pipe going to the filter instead of a vented cap which would pull in more dust.

I use the standard housing with either a wix or wesfil filter. Nothing got past them when I was racing autocross on dusty tracks. Just make sure all you seals and gaskets on the housings are good and tight.

Also meant to say standard HS4 housing with elbow works, you may have to fettle out the inner bore of the elbow if you think it is restricting but I never bothered, just bolted them on.

I thought I had tried it and it didn't fit, I will have to look again.

A Donaldson Cyclopac is the bee's knee's of Air Filters for sure, but it's way more filter than you'd ever need on paved roads. They are also pretty big, there's sure no where under the bonnet of a Mini you'd get one in.

I feel a stock type Air Filter is well suited for suburban driving. Just have a good look over what ever you go for to see where it could leak and make adjustments or modifications as you feel is needed. Just keep in mind with any sheet metal type casing, the metal can flex a lot and often over-tightening any fasteners on them distorts the casing and then they leak.

Older volvos used hs6 with air filters to suit.

Google "Converting Air Cleaner Elements for SU Carburetors " for ideas and inspiration.

The same principle could be applied to chrome pancakes doing away with the foam and using a paper element.

It probably is overkill, the only reason for it is the maybe once or twice a year that I might drive it west to where there are dirt roads. It is a Leyland mini and there isn't really anything to the drivers side of the engine so I was thinking there might just be space.

The flexing is one thing I worry about with making a housing, I always think it will leak as I wouldn't get it perfect.

And no I am not going to do it this way  :D

I hadn't found that page about it which is a good idea. The problem is minis need offset filters which it seems aren't available for HS6s

My first plan was to use the Marina intake thing that came with the carb as it has a round fitting the same size as a Stromberg. Once I did some measuring I quickly realised that as it doesn't move the inlet away from the firewall, only to the side then no housings will fit on that either. I will find a photo of it later.

I could create a similar thing but offset and maybe that would work ok.
