Hi,

I've an Austin 87, recently purchased and now renovating - short journey's are getting up to red, rad water looks absolutely filthy so my first port of call is to drain it & flush it. However.....it's the rad without a drain tap, that needs the bottom hose removing, the jubilee clip is pretty rusty and it's a nightmare to a) get to and b) attempt to turn. I'm scared of rounding it off and have given up.

Any tips?

Cheers!

If and big if, if your hose clips have a hex on them get yourself a flexi drive, they are a god send and come with a reversible socket which does most clips, if not it might be easier to take the rad out
Take the grille off
Undo and remove the bolt on the rad support bracket
Undo the top hose and remove completely
Undo and take off the top rad support bracket
Undo the the lower hose clip where it attaches to the water pump and pull the hose off, and you be able to take the whole thing out with the hose attached to the rad

If that fails just cut the hoses, hoses are cheap enough and yours could well be dogged out and you get the chance to have some nice spanky new ones

I usually remove the complete radiator and bottom hose as one assembly. Remove the jubilee from the water pump end of the hose

That is what I do. With the grille off it is easy to remove the rad, shroud and hose as on sub-assembly.

Me too; you can do everything from under the bonnet rather than under the car.

Cheers folks. Got there eventually, with a mini angle grinder! Managed to get the clip off, replaced with a new jubilee. Thermostat ended up being the apparent issue. U too next time….
