Hi guy's,

I thought my battery was cactus but after putting a Multimeter on it , it was still showing 12.5volts after a couple of hard starting attempts.  I put the Multimeter on while the engine was running and no gain in voltages and dropped when I put on the high beam.

Obviously the alternator is the problem.  Any recommendations for a new alternator?

It looks like it is cheaper to get a new one than get my Lucas unit reconditioned?

Thanks Brad.

As Steve suggested, check all the connections first. I found on many where this has occurred, it was just the connections at the Starter Solenoid. The strip that the Quick Connectors are fitted on to is only plated steel and they rust, cleaning that might be the issue.

I've been using the 70 Amp units in recent years, but I have found the bearings and brushes in them need to be changed out around the 40 000 - 50 000 km mark.

OK problem fixed, it's quite embarrassing really.
It turned out to be a slightly oily and loose fan belt.
Degreased the engine down and tightened the fan belt and now I have 14.2volts at the alternator.
I did go and buy a new fan belt but remembered last time I had to remove the radiator and what a nasty job it was so it's on the bench for later.
Thanks fella's
Brad
