Is there any quality ignition coils are currently available? mainly for standard non ballasted points ignition but I am also interested to know for ballasted points systems.

I suspect that the coil failures in one mini I work on are not necessarily due to poor coils but due to poor mounting and worn out distributors (dwell goes up with vacuum advance). I believe I have solved those problems for now but now a new coil is needed.

The other four vehicles I work on all happen to be using old Bosch coils of various ages, some original even though they have Lucas electrical systems. Like most things the quality of coils (including Bosch) has gone down and any of the Bosch coils I have seen recommended seem to now be impossible to source.

The British Remax coil is getting decent write ups so that may be worth ago,I'm not sure about the shipping costs though, Spider on here should be able to point you in the right direction he's from your manor.

Cheers Steve.

I'm sorta 'between coils' presently. I was using the Bosch GT40 for many happy years and I'm still running them on most of my cars and those in our group, but those bought in the past couple of years sadly now are rubbish.

There is a Bosch Blue that's made in Brazil that I was put on to by other's on our wonderful forum. Some of our guys are running these and been quite happy with them so far, but I'm not ready just yet to make a call on them - ask me a little later in the year.

The Remax that Steven mentioned, recently came up in a discussion on another forum where  I had a bit of a look in to them and I'm impressed to see they are made in the UK. They certainly appear a decent unit;-

I've been meaning to try a Pertronix coil for some time, but haven't got around to it yet.

Anyone have any experience with one?

That was actually the last one to fail but the longest lasting of any previously fitted. The failure could of course not be the coils fault but it is also getting rusty after a couple of years.

The mini was purchased and on the road in 2018. The order of coils that have been fitted:
- intermotor coil
- a 1968 Lucas
- new Bosch GT40
- Fuelmiser
- another new GT40
- Powerspark viper dry

Then there were issues that I determined was the coil using my engine analyser so I loaned an old Bosch SU12 made in Japan. The SU12 was fitted for some time until I wanted my coil back.
The owner unconvinced it was the coil put the Powerspark back on and that was ok according to the owner. A while later it came back to me and I once again diagnosed the coil as being faulty. There has always been a clear scope pattern improvement putting the SU12 on compared to the Powerspark. This time even the owner agreed switching the coil fixed the issue. As I was not going to loan my own coil again a newer (unknown age) SU12 was borrowed from another vehicle.

This is where this topic is involved, I need to recommend a good coil to purchase. I was who recommended the Powerspark one previously as I was searching for a non oil filled coil.

That was the one I was considering but I haven't seen many comments about their products so all I could go on was their marketing.

I have previously looked at getting their points and shipping was cheap, shipping from the UK to AUS is normally pretty reasonable.

You wouldn't want to buy them at the physical store prices which look to be 3x the price (Fuelmiser at Repco). I have no idea who the OEM for the fuelmiser coils are but caps, rotors and points are FACET (Made in Italy). FACET have discontinued most of the mini ignition components so I assume it is why Repco have the fuelmiser branded ones on clearance for low prices.
