Popping Out Of 2Nd Gear

Best Answer Designer , 24 June 2023 - 04:47 AM

Hi,

Not quite sure of your set up with the quick shift  but did you replace the small rubber gaiter part no DAM3022. I  found when I fitted a new one the replacement one was slightly longer and slightly stiffer than the original and therefore prevented the gear change rod from moving it's full distance into the gearbox. Put the old one back on and no longer slipped out of 2nd gear. Also slipped out of reverse as well.

Hi all,

Mini setup -

Engine mounted with new normal engine to subframe mounts with top and bottom rods with uprated bushings.

Subframe fully hard mounted.

Most of front end suspension has been refurbished / replaced with new items correct bushings etc.

KAD quick shifter fitted.

Problem - The 2nd gear pops out usually when cornering

I have noticed that the gear lever shakes(bacwards and forwards) , with what looks like engine revs, and as they get faster the stick vibration gets less!!

The stick does not shake in the other gears.

Original gearstick cotton reels are installed (65000) could this be a problem? (I hope) or do you think it is more gearbox internals?

Thanks J

As mentioned above, this is the syncros on second gear wearing out . Had this on my old GT in the 90s in third gear.

The only option is to get the gearbox refreshed or reconditioned and this means you'll need to remove it from the engine. Engine out job. May as well do the engine whilst you're at it.

Not good
Dont have the money or the time for this at the moment.
Just got it to the point of running perfectly and did not want to do engine removal again until could afford a stage 3 head.

Would removing the quickshift help to prelong gearbox life?

Possibly, worth trying, though expect disappointment.  Strange that the gear drops out whilst cornering, The only time I've had syncro teeth wear to the extent they wouldn't hold in engagement, the problem occured during acceleration/deceleration.  Right hand corners only?

Check there's no obstruction around the Shift Rod Coupling, that might be preventing full movement of the Shift rod first.

If it's not that, then it'll be as Jarvis SPI suggested - a worn 1st / 2nd Selector Fork.

While that's what it will be now, if you leave it and it slips out about 10 times under power, it rounds off the Dogs on the Gear itself and this too - at some considerable expense - will also need replacing as well.

I had a similar experience of it jumping out of 2nd gear after replacing the small rubber gaiter, it's worth a check.

Turns out that's exactly what the problem was

It did not look bad but when I got under and tried to get into 2nd you could see the rubber was fully compressed.

I actually cut a bit off it and put it back on and hey presto no more problem or wobble of the gearstick -- So relieved

Once again forum comes up trumps - Thanks all.

YEEHAA

:genius: Sorry couldn't resist that one

For every ones guide the new DAM3022 I got from Minispares, it was about two or three years ago so hopefully their current stock does not have the same problem of possibly not being to spec.

I actually think those gaiters are a bad idea. I never it them. Apart from introducing this issue, they would also hold dirt, that when 2nd, 4th and reverse are selected, gets nicely packed in to the seal. I don't know when these were introduced in production, but they were never used when the Rod Change started being fitted in 74 and certainly in our local production, which went to 81, we never had them nor any issues from them not being fitted.
