I need to find some springs for the centrifugal advance in a Pertronix Flame Thrower distributor. Does anyone know if these are the same springs used in a Lucas distributor?

Google them.

They have a customer service and technical support contact.

I tried going to the Pertronix site and was completely frustrated just trying to find what distributor I have. They can't even tell you what car it fits.

Maybe someone more familiar with Lucas distributors could say whether the guts of the Pertronix is a clone of a Lucas distributor or completely different.

I dug through my parts stash and found some springs from a Yamaha XS650 auto-advance that are the right diameter for this distributor. I did have to cut a few coils off them to get the right length. That cured the massive pinging (pinking) problem. Still needs some tuning but it's on the right track.

The answer is to get the distributor recurved to match your engine. You can use any brand or style of spring as long as it gives the right advance

It look like Lucas springs should work fine, and there are plenty of different types to choose from

Yep, recurving is what I'm doing. I wish I could use ANY brand or style of spring. Around here, the only springs that are plentiful are for GM HEI distributors, which have too large a diameter to fit this distributor. I ordered some advance springs from Mini Mania but was told that they are back ordered and they don't know when they will get more. There may be more available around me than I know. Like I said in my intro thread, my experience and car-guy circle only extends to American automobiles.

You shouldn't be guessing in advance curves, just get a dizzy that's curved for your spec.

International postage isn't expensive compared to detonation.

I appreciate your concern. I hope I'm not coming across as argumentative, that is not my intent. While I am new to Minis, I do have experience tuning. I'm employing a distributor test stand and methodical approach. That's at least one step above guessing.  :-)

Thanks for the links, guys. Its super cool that there is a vacuum advance specialist for these. Mine has a cheesy "universal" style vacuum advance that was pulling in WAY too much advance. I modified it to stop at 8 degrees which is working alright now but its nice to know there are application specific units still available.

They also recurve distributors using a bench tester, so they should have a supply of springs
