"Most people will remember this year's Glastonbury for the bravura finale by Sir Elton John, playing what might be his last show in the UK. But for one 27-year-old festival-goer, it was notable for a far less happy reason.
Returning to the field where he had parked his parents' Land Rover Defender — a high-end SUV — one young man immediately realised that something was amiss.
Both the car's front doors were missing.
After checking that it was legal to do so, he and his partner were forced to drive the 120 miles home to Oxfordshire in a noisy and doorless vehicle.
But, bizarre as the theft seemed, it was not the only such incident at Glastonbury that day.
The family's insurance company said that they had received two other reports of doors being taken from Land Rover Defenders at the festival. All these owners were only the latest victims of an alarming new crime trend, which involves cars being stripped and left in situ rather than stolen outright.
This phenomenon has been dubbed 'car cannibalism'.
And it's not just the wealthy owners of luxury vehicles that need be concerned. In fact, the most frequent targets are popular, smaller cars such as the Vauxhall Corsa, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio...."

In the 1950s, a boy left my prep school because his father went to prison.

Father and two others would got to a cinema, sit in the car park, and when the owners of a new, say Hillman, went in to watch the film, they swapped the engine for a pre-war one.

At least they left them with an engine, not like the bastards who took your doors

I do recall in the 1960's a guy I knew slightly had a 997 Ford Anglia. The engine was a bit 'tired'. but ran OK.

He hired an Anglia 1200 for the weekend and swapped the engines, after grinding off any engine ident markings.

The hire car was returned to the hire company and all was fine. I've often wondered how long it was before the small engine was identified. Apparently the thief got away with it.
