Hi,
I fitted mine with the narrower slot onto the metal and wider slot onto the glass, which should be the norm. I would suggest however that you apply a sealant to both channels. 3m do one which does not set hard, sorry I cannot remember it's full name but it is black in colour. It can be a bit messy but it is well worth it as it does stop water getting in and down behind the dash and then onto the carpets.

What you are thinking of is 3M 8509 bedding and glazing compound. That is the correct product, there are also other manufacturers of equivalent products, search for a mastic windscreen sealant.

Position the rubber, with the join at the top of the screen, and the expander with the join at the bottom of the screen.
