Purchased a Rear Subframe brand new with a "Phosphate coating" and this is how it arrived -

Flaking off in sections. Sort of put Me off as there's no point in painting the epoxy mastic primer onto a surface that's Flaking :-(

The few new subframes I have bought, I only ever looked at the coating, where it it might be, as something to stop (or reduce) any rust while in storage. I've always had them blasted, then painted them in my favorite coating at the time.

My impression from the advert was it was going to be properly coated in an Anti Corrosion Phosphate coating ready to paint ontop of :-(

Will contact the seller and if get no where will just have to sand and paint it in Epoxy Mastic

It was from Minis-R-Us

Yea but that's adding another £150 or so to the cost. The idea of getting a one treated with a Phosphate primer was so it was ready to apply an Epoxy protection to.

Also been recommended not to powder coat as once it chips it's going to be a nightmare and a easy access for water and corrosion

I put mine in a pile of straw and burn off the paint so that I can get it 'hot-dipped' galvanised, and then paint it with a couple of coats of white Hammerite.

Mmm no I wouldn’t be happy with that so going back to the seller is the right way to go.

However if you hit a wall with them you could go down the small claims route or take the hit, get the whole thing media blasted then apply your coating from there.

I have harped on about some of these so called e coats etc from manufacture and to be honest you have no idea what has actually been done, how and where they have been stored etc. so no matter whether it’s a Heritage product or magnum I remove any coating back to bare metal and then go from there.

if it's the drilling for the inner end of a front support pin, then i would expect a neat round hole to locate the pin correctly

Sounds a way to end up with a distorted subframe!

I am a fan of Hammerite though

the best money you can spend on a mini is a nice looking rear subframe. I would also sandblast a brand new frame, then a layer of zinc rust protection, then powder coating and a layer of wax in to the hollow spaces.

Then you never have to worry about the rust on the rear again and if you sell the car you get the costs of the powder coating 3 times back.
