I have just replaced my timing cover oil seal and gasket cover using one of the newer type gaskets with the blue sealant between the bolt holes and did not use any sealant.

Guess what - it leaks!

Have I made a school boy error and should have used sealant?

I have a spare standard gasket in the garage so I can strip it all down again and replace and use some sealant.

Is Loctite SI 5980 the best one to use?

Could kick myself as I am pleased that engine is now getting up to temp after replacing thermostat with an 88f one but also so annoyed as I need to strip it all down again!

Leaking from gasket or seal?
Need to leave cover loose, push in the front pulley to centralise seal,
Then tighten cover evenly
I use blue hylomar on both sides of gasket on all my engines ,
No leaks

Leaking from gasket, can see a small drip from the bottom of the cover.

Will strip it down again tomorrow :-(

Looks as though my error and must not have centralised the pulley.  Oil seal is damaged but it was also leaking from the bottom of the gasket.

will have order new seal which is a shame as I was hoping to have sorted today.

would love to fit an alloy cover I must admit but no funds!

check the steel cover isn't warped before you re-fit it again, The Alloy ones aren't guaranteed not to leak, I've got one and I've tried 3+ times to stop it leaking and it still leaks  >_<.

Thanks for the tip, it appears to be OK.

Sorry to read you are having problems with an alloy version, as I thought they were supposed to be much better.

I forget but aren't the bottom bolts held into the plate by three threads and never seem to fully tighten and always seem to have the top threads pulled proud of the mating surface?Might be thinking of my MGB,Steve..

I was able to torque them to spec without issue but it did see, like it wasn’t enough.

not sure how many turns but the bolts are shorter otherwise they hit the block

You're not wrong - worth running a file over the plate to knock off any high spots

My preference is blue hylomar on the top half of the gasket and rtv sealant on the bottom half
