Just wondering if anyone can help, I’ve just finished a rebuild 1380 engine with a refreshed gearbox and converted to a pre verto clutch which is a MED ST2 kit. As per the below video I’m getting this noise coming from the clutch at idle and gets louder if I rev the car at idle but disappears if I drop the clutch. Car drives great apart from some judder from the clutch on pull away and very tight to get into gear. Any ideas please ?

Have you got a clearance set between the release arm and the little 7/16" adjustment bolt head?

Few pics below during the rebuild

I did also adjust up the clutch arm etc

Although I used the clutch oil seal tool I’ve seen it’s leak a few spots of oil so I will be taking the clutch off again which is a pain but can’t see this has anything to do with this noise.

I’ll try adjusting the clutch arm up again, could this be causing the issue if it’s not correctly adjusted ? If anyone could advise on their method to adjust this please ?

After much discussion about this one, my current method is:
-Disconnect the return spring

Adjust the overthrow stop nuts (Prevents the clutch release from moving too far and janking up the crankshaft thrust bearings)

-Unwind the large stop nuts (on the end of the plunger)
-Slip a pipe over the clutch arm (for extra leverage) and pull the arm away from the engine as far as it will go. (Releasing the clutch, and then further)
-Screw the stop nut in until it touches the wok.

-Release the arm and remove the pipe.
-screw the stop nut in another half a turn, then lock it with the lock nut.

Then adjust the free play (ensures the release bearing is pulled away from the clutch when not in use) :

-Using light finger force only, pull the clutch arm out until it stops and hold it there.
-Wind out the stop bolt until it just touches the arm
-Wind the bolt back in until there's 0.015" (0.4mm) clearance between it and the arm (while still lightly pulling the arm out)
-Lock the bolt using the lock nut and check the clearance

Reattach the return spring and enjoy.

(And yes, if the release bearing is touching the clutch all the time (not enough clearance) then it might be rattling as the engine runs. Usually you'd see/feel the plunger moving around as the engine turns, but if the engine's shaking it might be hard to see.)

I suspect engine mount bolts are a fraction too long.

Thanks for the reply’s, I’m due to remove the clutch tomorrow and sort the leaking oil seal and inspect the clutch for any issues.

With a pre verto clutch do you have to dismantle it to then pull the flywheel off ? Just worried about the balancing being disturbed.

I used to have a verto which you pull off in one piece.

No; just remove the thrust plate from the top of the diaphragm to access and undo the flywheel bolt
