Good afternoon folks,

I am still in the process of rebuilding this mini, after much struggle I’ve got the short block together and cylinder head on but I’m now running into problems with the gearbox.

I am trying to set up the idler gear end float and it’s massive - like over 0.8mm

I thought initially that it could be excessive wear in the flywheel housing but on closer inspection I think it’s the gearbox housing itself. For reference gearbox is 22A1522.

Looking at the face where the idler thrust washer runs against it looks heavily worn (read aluminium looks to have overheated) and the oil channels which I’ve seen typically here are missing. Furthermore, when I put a straight edge across its face it is very much not flat. I’ve tried to include some photographs to illustrate the issue.

Do I need a new gearbox housing or is this the resolvable in a way I’m missing?

Any help is much appreciated.

Cammy

Somewhat thinking out loud here folks, my only other thought is that I could try and get the face on the gearbox for the idler gear washer machined back flat (not exactly sure how you’d go about holding the box in a mill) and then machine back the flywheel cover to allow me to set the end float of the idler gear.

Having said that the “channels” and 10 and 2 o clock on the face are still missing and I imagine that these are for oil and would need to be reinstated?

Thanks.

If you can find someone to surface just that area of the gearbox,  they could probably cut you a thick washer out of template, and harden it.

Don’t forget there are drop gearsets that don’t use the shims. But will need some work.
