So I've just bought a 1987 mini city which came with a tilting glass sunroof. Unfortunately, it leaks quite badly...

The seal looks quite squished and has a small hole in it. There's some plastic pins screwed to the glass that locate into the latch mechanism that look kinda bent too.

Can anyone help me identify what model of sunroof this is, and therefore where I might be able to find a new seal/parts for it? Photos below.

Thanks!

Your best bet is to visit a sunroof specialist and establish whether the seals are still available. Mine on the Midas was a 1981 sunroof, and therefore there was no longer anything they could get to fit.

Then it's up to whether to get a new one fitted, or bite the bullet and do either a Webasto conversion or have a new roof skin spot welded on.

There used to be a guy in B'ham who sold perspex covers.

He put the perspex on a Mini / Imp / Cortina / roof, put it all in an oven and the perspex took the roof profile.

When you got it, you removed your leaking sunroof, cut the perspex larger than the hole and stuck it over the hole with mastic.

Sometimes taking the rubbers off and swelling them can fix the leaks.

Making them slightly thicker and sealing better.

Have you figured out where it leaks? A thorough cleaning may help if there's a film of gunk stopping the glass from contacting the rubber.

You might manage  to pull the glass closer to the rubber by adding some packing under the catch & hinges.

There are various rubber mouldings that might be worth a look to supplement or replace what's already there

The catch doesn't seem to pull it down enough so there's a gap around the back. Packing it looks like it'd close more, not less, due to the design of the hinge.

I've taken the rubber off reseated it, it does seem kinda squished even when you take it off. What would swell it?

Tried Bristol Sunroofs online, they said they don't have parts for this one. Emailed Somerford to ask if the seal they sell for the RSP one will fit this, not replied yet.

I'll have a search around for metro sunroofs see if that turns up anything. I did take the seal off, but it's hard to tell from photos online what'll actually fit.

No luck with either Bristol Sunroofs or Somerford. Tried a few seal suppliers but nobody had anything with a profile that matched.

I think I'll just bond it into place, since I'd never bother opening it anyway. Thinking it might be something a local windscreen place could do neatly for me.

You could always try a generic extra seal on the glass part as a belt and braces approach, Works well on bootlids so may help you.

Get some adhesive closed cell draught excluder from a DIY store and stick it to the seal area on the glass.Cheap and easy and it just might work,Steve..

Permanently clagging it up does seem drastic when it likely only needs a bit of tweaking to fill the gap under the glass , or pull the glass down a bit until it regains contact with the seals.
