My 92 SPi has been outside under a cover for over a year and today was the day to move it back into the garage.
About 8 weeks ago I got it started after a faff with the relay box but today nothing.
I've got 12V at the tank but no fuel at the injector. It will run if I squirt WD40 in the inlet so the spark is there.
I took the tank out and tried the pump with a dedicated 12V source. Nothing.

There are numerous replacement pumps on the market. Any suggestions what I should go for?

The full unit is very expensive for what it is, but it's possible to replace just the pump. This requires a little electrical fettling but is a cost effective approach. Minispares sells the pump only, and there are cheaper ones available. Take your pick. I haven't seen any SPI's with an external i.e. outside the fuel tank, but technically it's possible.

Hi, replacing the pump only is what I intend to do, it's already in bits on the bench!
My question really should have been what is the best pump?
Generic cheapy off eBay, pricy unit from Minispares or similar or something in between such as Sytec?

Against my usual practice I bought a cheap off Ebay - lasted about 3 months. In the end I bit the bullet and bought the whole thing from mini spares.

Oh, in the absence of anyone warning against it I have bought a cheap one off eBay...
Time will tell 😬

I was thinking of replacing my 70k mile pump from my 94 SPi just for piece of mind. Any other suggestions. I am in the US so if these pumps are easily swapped with ones from other cars (as I have read), would anyone suggest one over the other OR just go with direct replacement from Spares? My SPi is as tuned as one can be with the stock ECU and the stock pressure is only 1 bar. If I, say, went the SC mappable injection setup down the road, should I take the time now to upgrade to a 3+bar pump like the one for the MPI? Assuming the upgraded PSI was down to there being 2 injectors over one?

Hi brivinci, two injectors do not need more pressure. They possibly need more put threw..But as long as your engine is not a 5, 8 or more cubic inch one  it is marginal.

I plan to just replace the pump itself. Not the entire unit. Being that they are the same price and the same amount of work, sticking with the SPi 1-bar pump would be the way forward. OR, with all that, might as well future proof with the MPi pump??

Would the pressure regulator handle the increased pressure?Correct fuelling relies on fuel pressure as I am sure you know.Steve..

That would be my question as well. Imagine it would be best to replace with standard and worry about any potential updates IF that ever happens

It is not a problem of the pressure, i would worry about the flow rate.As long as the valve inside the pressure regulator can handle the flow, it will work.If the flow is higher than the the valves flow rate, pressure will increase.

okay.... Presure....

SPI's run at about 1 bar (15psi).... the MPI's run at about 3 bar (45psi)

although this is regulated, there are SPI and MPI rated pumps, some SPI pumps are internally regulated, you can use an MPI pump on an SPI but not visa versa

Interesting to see the price difference.
